Freshwater Fishing in Louisiana

Louisiana’s freshwater fishing, including one of the top bass fishing lakes in the United States, rivals its famous saltwater scene.

Near New Orleans, the Northshore features scenic rivers like the Bogue Falaya, Bogue Chitto and Tchefuncte, home to largemouth bass, channel catfish and alligator gar. South Louisiana is a longtime freshwater fishing haven, with hotspots such as Bayou Black near Houma for bass, Lac Des Allemands — known as the Catfish Capital of the Universe — and well-stocked ponds around Baton Rouge.

Public lands offer even more opportunities, including Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge and Kisatchie National Forest.

Louisiana State Parks are also prime fishing destinations, from Toledo Bend Reservoir — one of Bassmaster’s top bass lakes — to Chicot State Park, Chemin-A-Haut State Park and lakes like Bistineau, Bruin and Claiborne, where anglers can catch bass, crappie, sunfish and hybrid striped bass.

Louisiana Fishing Regulations

Most visitors must purchase a Louisiana fishing license before fishing in freshwater or saltwater. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries issues licenses and sets regulations such as size limits, possession limits and seasonal closures.
